President Donald Trump said the US would take a hard-line stance against Iran, raising the prospect of renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Trump said on June 10 that “we’re going to be attacking them very hard,” according to Walter Bloomberg.
He later reiterated the point, saying the US “will be attacking Iran hard.”
The comments came as the US and Iran continued to trade blame over a recent incident involving a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had previously said a US response was needed over the incident. Iran also warned it would respond appropriately to US threats.
The US and Iran are continuing diplomatic contacts over nuclear talks, but neither side has ruled out military action.
Markets are focused on the risk that any escalation between the two countries could heighten geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and fuel volatility in global oil prices and haven assets.
