President Donald Trump said he canceled a planned airstrike on Iran after talks between Washington and Tehran advanced to the highest level and a final agreement neared.

In a Truth Social post on June 11, Trump said discussions with Iran had reached the country’s top leadership and received approval. He said he had therefore canceled airstrikes and bombing that had been scheduled for that evening.

Trump said both the broad framework and the detailed issues under discussion had been approved. He also claimed the agreement had been endorsed by the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt.

He added that the naval blockade would remain in place until a final agreement is signed.

Trump said the venue and timing for the signing would be announced soon.

The comments came shortly after Trump had publicly raised the possibility of a hard-line military response against Iran.

Markets are weighing the prospect that a diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran could ease geopolitical risks in the Middle East, supporting crude oil prices and sentiment toward risk assets. Iran’s government has yet to issue an official confirmation.
