The final funeral ceremony will be held in Mashhad on July 9. Khamenei, whose hometown is Mashhad, is to be buried at the Imam Reza shrine.
Khamenei was killed alongside family members in US and Israeli bombardment on Feb. 28, the first day of the war. July 4, when the funeral begins, coincides with the 250th anniversary of US Independence Day. Iranian authorities had initially planned the funeral for March but delayed it as the war dragged on. They later held a nationwide memorial event on April 9.
Khamenei stood at the apex of Iran's theocratic system for 37 years. He joined Ruhollah Khomeini in leading the Islamic Revolution in 1978 and became Iran's second supreme leader after Khomeini's death in 1989.
