Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country’s elite military force, rejected the possibility of signing an agreement with the US this weekend and sharply criticized President Donald Trump.
CNN reported on June 13 that the IRGC formally denied speculation that Iran would sign an accord with the US on Sunday. The group described Trump’s push for a signing on that date as unusual stubbornness.
In a Telegram post, the IRGC called the pressure over the timetable "a test directed at Iran’s negotiating team." It added that Trump announced the timing unilaterally even though the Iranian delegation had made clear the memorandum of understanding had not been finalized and that a Sunday signing was absolutely impossible.
The IRGC also claimed Trump was trying to force the signing schedule to coincide with his birthday on June 14.
It said Trump’s insistence was intended to use the event symbolically and criticized the move as an attempt to turn a diplomatic negotiation into a personal publicity event.
