Iran has yet to make a final decision on whether to sign a peace agreement, local media reported.
Fars News Agency and other Iranian state-affiliated outlets reported on June 14, citing sources, that Tehran has not reached a final decision on a draft memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Iran is still reviewing the proposal’s political, legal and technical aspects, the reports said. Experts and senior officials with decision-making authority are examining various clauses in the draft and closely assessing all potential repercussions and effects of the agreement, the sources added.
The reports directly contradicted speculation that had circulated since the previous day that the agreement could be signed over the weekend. Expectations for an early deal had grown after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has served as a mediator between the two countries, said the terms could be finalized within 24 hours.
President Donald Trump also wrote on Truth Social on June 13 that the agreement was scheduled to be signed on June 14. Middle Eastern media outlets had likewise reported that a virtual signing ceremony would take place that day.
But the prospect of signing the deal on schedule appeared to be fading after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, and state media formally denied that such a timetable had been set. The IRGC criticized Trump for unusually pressing for a signing to coincide with his June 14 birthday even though Iran’s negotiating team had made clear the document had not been finalized. It also called on him to halt what it described as a one-sided publicity campaign.
