President Donald Trump called for restraint after Israel’s strike on Beirut, saying the attack would undermine ongoing Middle East peace talks.
In a Truth Social post on June 14, Trump said “the attack on Beirut this morning should not have happened,” adding that “we are very close to a peace agreement with Iran.”
Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, he wrote, but the incident cited as justification for the strike was very minor and caused no casualties. He stressed that important negotiations should not be disrupted.
Trump also said the parties were close to an agreement that could bring peace not only to Iran but also to Lebanon, and called on all sides to lower tensions.
He urged Israel not to carry out any further attacks anywhere in Lebanon and said no group, including Hezbollah, should attack Israel.
“This could be the start of a long and beautiful peace,” Trump added. “Do not ruin it.”
The strike came after Trump said an agreement with Iran was effectively in its final stages and could be signed soon.
