US Vice President JD Vance said there are still many details to resolve in a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran, but that the US remains in a favorable position for the next phase of negotiations.
Vance told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on June 15 that “there are a lot of details to be finalized,” while stressing that “the United States holds all the cards.”
The US and Iran reached a preliminary agreement a day earlier to extend a 60-day ceasefire and establish a framework for follow-up talks on Iran’s nuclear program and other major issues. The full text of the agreement has not been released.
Vance described the deal as centered on two main pillars: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and securing a long-term commitment from Iran never to develop a nuclear weapon. “The two big pillars of this agreement are reopening the Strait of Hormuz and getting a long-term commitment that Iran will never develop a nuclear weapon,” he said.
If Iran complies with the terms of the agreement, economic sanctions and other barriers could be eased, Vance said, allowing the country to be “welcomed back into the global economy.”
“It’s a great day for the American people,” he added.
