President Donald Trump said any sanctions relief for Iran would come only after Tehran fulfills its obligations under the agreement.
On June 15, Trump said there would be "no sanctions relief of any kind until Iran does what it has to do," Walter Bloomberg reported.
The comment came shortly after the US and Iran said they had completed signing a memorandum of understanding, or MOU.
The US government had previously said economic incentives would be offered in stages only if Iran meets its commitments tied to the nuclear program.
Iran has recently claimed discussions were underway on releasing frozen assets and providing economic support. The US, however, has maintained that signing the agreement alone would not trigger any funding.
Markets took Trump's remarks as reaffirming that sanctions relief would not come automatically. Iran would first need to take concrete steps, including dismantling nuclear facilities, handling nuclear materials and accepting international inspections.
The US and Iran recently completed signing the memorandum of understanding, and details of the agreement are to be disclosed later.
