President Donald Trump said the US could resume military action if an agreement with Iran falls apart.
Walter Bloomberg reported on June 17 that Trump made the remarks as Washington and Tehran prepare to sign a memorandum of understanding, or MOU. If the deal fails, the US could again respond militarily, Trump said.
He added that Iran wants a deal and hopes to return to normal relations, signaling optimism that the negotiations can be completed.
After signing the MOU, the US and Iran plan to hold about 60 days of follow-up talks toward a final agreement covering Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.
The two sides have recently continued negotiations focused on restoring normal operations in the Strait of Hormuz and limiting Iran’s nuclear program. The US has also said it would consider economic compensation and sanctions relief depending on whether Iran follows through on the agreement.
Markets have grown more hopeful that tensions in the Middle East will ease. Still, Trump’s renewed mention of a military option underscores lingering uncertainty over the final agreement process.
