The Federal Reserve raised its projected path for benchmark interest rates and marked up its inflation outlook, according to Walter Bloomberg on June 17.

The Fed’s Summary of Economic Projections showed the median forecast for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026 at 3.8%, up from the previous 3.4%.

Officials projected the rate at 3.6% for 2027 and 3.4% for 2028. The longer-run neutral rate was unchanged at 3.1%.

The inflation outlook also moved higher.

The Fed expects personal consumption expenditures inflation to return to its 2% target only in 2028.

By contrast, the growth outlook was trimmed slightly, while the unemployment-rate forecast was largely unchanged.

The latest dot plot suggests rate cuts may proceed more slowly than previously expected. It also indicates some officials are not ruling out additional tightening.

The projections showed that 18 of the Fed’s 19 policymakers participated in this round of forecasts.

Markets are taking the update as a sign that the Fed remains alert to the risk of a renewed pickup in inflation, potentially tempering expectations for future rate cuts.
