Vice President JD Vance abruptly canceled plans to travel to Switzerland as expectations mounted for a breakthrough in US-Iran nuclear talks.

The White House said June 18 that Vance had scrapped a trip scheduled for later that night, CNN reported. The administration said working-level coordination for the next phase of the talks has not yet been completed.

A White House spokesperson said plans for future technical talks have yet to be finalized. The US delegation is prepared to depart as soon as possible, but logistics and scheduling for the negotiations have been neither simple nor predictable.

For now, the vice president will not depart on June 18, the spokesperson added. The White House said it would provide another update once a specific timetable for the next step is set.

Vance had originally been scheduled to leave to attend a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, signing ceremony between the US and Iran on June 20 in Switzerland. He also said at a White House press conference earlier on June 18 that he intended to attend the ceremony.
