South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on June 19 that he intends to reshuffle the cabinet in the second year of his presidency to press ahead with a new policy agenda.
Speaking at a briefing at the Chunchugwan press center of the presidential office on the results of his overseas trip, Lee said the reshuffle process could begin once prime minister nominee Han Seong-sook starts work. He added that there is still time before then.
One year into the administration, Lee said, the nature of state affairs now looks different from what lies ahead. So far, the government’s work has been closer to bringing disorderly state affairs back into order, he said.
The next phase, he said, would be a period to properly carry out planned new initiatives. That means the cabinet should be reorganized with people suited to that task.
Lee said he has not yet thought in depth about the scope of the reshuffle or which ministries would be affected. Still, he said a cabinet shake-up is necessary because a year has passed and the administration is entering a new phase.
