JD Vance, the US vice president, said talks with Iran in Switzerland had made progress, with Tehran agreeing to allow nuclear inspectors into the country, according to the US account. Iran, however, said the nuclear issue was discussed only briefly and that full-fledged nuclear negotiations have not begun.

Reuters reported that Vance described the state of the talks while speaking to reporters in Switzerland on June 21.

He said discussions related to nuclear inspections could begin as early as this week. Vance indicated that Iran had agreed to admit a team of nuclear inspectors.

The comments came after US-Iran talks in Switzerland, with Washington highlighting the inspections issue as a sign of progress.

Iran offered a different characterization. It said it briefly discussed the nuclear issue with the US during the talks, but that formal nuclear negotiations have not started.

The differing interpretations could shape the next phase of talks over nuclear inspections. The US views Iran's agreement to admit inspectors as concrete progress, while Iran maintains that nuclear negotiations are not yet fully underway.
