U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said charging tolls or fees for passage through international waterways is not allowed under international law.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 23 that Rubio said no country can impose tolls or fees on international waterways. The principle is already spelled out in existing international law, he added.

The remarks came amid continued discussion over transit arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran and Oman have said they are discussing a joint management framework for the Strait of Hormuz, including navigation control and the cost of maritime services.
