Kim Yong-beom, South Korea’s presidential chief of staff for policy, said the scale of corporate investments to be unveiled at a public briefing chaired by President Lee Jae-myung on June 29 would involve “very unfamiliar” figures.
Kim made the remarks on June 26 in an appearance on the YouTube channel “Kim Eo-jun’s Humility Is Hard News Factory.”
He described the event as a venue to explain a program developed through joint efforts by the government and businesses.
The briefing will cover three areas: semiconductors, plans to build artificial intelligence data centers on a massive gigawatt scale, and physical AI and robotics. Given the size of the projects, debate is likely to intensify from the outset over whether they are real, he added.
Lee is scheduled to chair the “Public Briefing on South Korea’s Three Mega Projects for a Great Leap Forward” at the presidential office on June 29. Plans for a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region, along with investment plans in the Honam and Chungcheong regions by Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., are expected to be disclosed at the event.
