U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he would not be surprised if the June employment report comes in very strong.
Walter Bloomberg reported on June 30 that Bessent made the remark, while adding that he has not yet seen the June jobs figures.
That means the comment was a forward-looking view based on recent economic trends, not a response to the official data.
Bessent also addressed gasoline prices, saying it is time to act for the American people and that refiners and distributors should behave responsibly.
In an interview with Fox News, he said of gasoline prices, "We are encouraging them to be good actors, and we are watching."
The remarks came ahead of the release of the U.S. June jobs report. A stronger-than-expected reading could affect the Federal Reserve's rate path and sentiment toward risk assets.
