A power struggle within Iran is emerging as a new variable in peace talks with the US.

Walter Bloomberg reported on July 30 that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is seeking the release of frozen overseas assets to support an economic recovery. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, meanwhile, is demanding control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The split could delay the negotiation schedule. It is also adding uncertainty to future navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
