The U.S. Treasury Department has added 131 Tron-based cryptocurrency wallets linked to Islamic State Khorasan, or ISIS-K, to its sanctions list.
Decrypt reported July 2 that the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added 134 cryptocurrency wallets to existing sanctions on ISIS-K. Of those, 131 were Tron wallets and three were Monero wallets.
Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said the sanctioned Tron wallets had received more than $1.4 million and sent about $880,000 since 2023. Tether froze all assets held in the 131 sanctioned Tron wallets.
Chainalysis said al-Azaim Media Foundation, an ISIS-K propaganda arm, had solicited cryptocurrency donations through websites and messaging platforms. Some of the newly sanctioned wallets were found to have transferred funds to a Syria-based cryptocurrency exchange.
Separately, OFAC also sanctioned two Brazilian nationals and four companies tied to Primeiro Comando da Capital, or PCC, Brazil’s largest criminal organization. OFAC said they were involved in moving more than $30 million in drug proceeds generated in the U.S. to Brazil using cryptocurrency.
