Ethereum Developers Back Buterin’s ‘Lean Ethereum’ Roadmap, Say Execution Speed Is the Challenge
Summary
- Vitalik Buterin’s long-term roadmap, Lean Ethereum, is drawing support from leading developers and researchers.
- Developers broadly agree with the roadmap’s direction, including stronger privacy protections and the adoption of cryptography designed to withstand quantum computing.
- Some developers proposed using artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to achieve implementation within about one year, saying execution speed will determine Ethereum’s competitiveness.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s long-term “Lean Ethereum” roadmap has won support from leading developers and researchers.
CoinDesk reported on July 6 that developers broadly agree with the plan’s direction, including stronger privacy protections and the adoption of cryptography designed to withstand quantum computing.
Some developers, however, argued that Buterin’s proposed three- to four-year development timeline is too long. They proposed aiming to implement the plan within about a year by making more aggressive use of artificial intelligence and large language models.
Industry participants say Ethereum’s future competitiveness will hinge less on developing core technologies than on how quickly it can execute.
