The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation will demonstrate a blockchain-based process for settling stock trades in real time on July 15. The test is drawing attention as an example of how traditional finance could move clearing, settlement and record-keeping functions onto on-chain infrastructure.
Crypto-focused media outlet BlockBeats reported on July 13 that DTCC plans to showcase the process on July 15.
The technology could simplify the clearing, settlement and trade-recording steps that follow stock trades on Wall Street and improve the efficiency of capital-market operations. In practice, that means the transfer of cash and shares, along with the recording of completed trades, could be handled faster and with greater transparency.
The demonstration appears to be more of a validation exercise than a step toward fully migrating the U.S. stock market to blockchain. DTCC, one of the largest securities clearing institutions in the US, has spent years researching and developing the technology.
Tokenized securities and on-chain settlement could reduce costs and improve trading efficiency. But regulatory compliance, compatibility with existing systems and coordination among market participants remain hurdles before traditional financial infrastructure can shift to blockchain.
Joseph Spiro, DTCC's head of digital asset products, said in a webinar in May that the company plans to launch a tokenization service this year. DTCC will demonstrate related use cases in a live operating environment in July and formally open the service in October, he said.
