Forecast Trend Report by Period

BitMEX's planned closure is deepening concerns over whether smaller cryptocurrency exchanges can survive. Analysts say concentrated liquidity and rising regulatory costs are accelerating an industry shakeout.
Cointelegraph reported July 23 that BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange co-founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed, will halt trading and cease operations on Sept. 23. The decision followed a strategic review by parent HDR Global Trading.
BMEX, BitMEX's utility token, plunged more than 90% after the closure announcement. BitMEX is widely credited with introducing perpetual futures to the industry, but its daily Bitcoin futures volume began declining in May 2021 and never regained the $5 billion level after peaking at $10 billion in 2020. CoinGecko data show BitMEX ranked ninth among derivatives exchanges in August 2023 with a 0.9% market share. By 2025, it had fallen out of the top 10.
Roshan Daria, a restructuring adviser, told Cointelegraph that the top five platforms account for about 80% of global spot trading volume. That has steadily worsened profitability for small and regional exchanges, which have few realistic ways to reach the scale needed to compete. He said the problem is structural, not cyclical.
Changes in the regulatory environment are also working against smaller exchanges. Coinbase launched perpetual futures in the US in May under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's regulatory framework. Kraken also introduced CFTC-regulated perpetual futures through Bitnomial, the exchange it acquired in June. Coinbase this month also obtained a UK investment services license as it expands its derivatives business.
