President Donald Trump said the war with Iran is “going very well” and claimed the US has the upper hand militarily. He said sustained US attacks have effectively neutralized Iran’s core military capabilities, including its navy and air force.

Trump made the remarks at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner event on July 24. Taking aim at press coverage, he said the war was “going extremely well” and urged people not to believe “fake news.”

He also pointed to what he described as concrete US battlefield gains. “We hit Iran very hard,” Trump said, adding that Iran has lost its naval and air capabilities. He also said Iran has very few drones left, despite media reports to the contrary.

On the prospects for a diplomatic agreement, Trump said it was not yet time to begin talks with Iran.

“Iran would love to make a deal, but I don’t think they’re ready yet,” he said. “I don’t think it’s time yet, but I’m willing to listen,” Trump added, leaving open the possibility of future talks.
