Samsung Electronics plans to start construction by the end of this year on its second semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, with mass production targeted for 2030.
During its July 30 earnings conference call, the company said expansion of advanced-node production capacity is currently failing to keep pace with demand. It is preparing to break ground on Taylor Fab 2 later this year and aims to begin mass production in 2030.
Preparations to bring Taylor Fab 1 online are proceeding as planned this year. Once the plant begins operations, Samsung plans to gradually expand 2-nanometer production capacity.
The company is also reviewing options to secure additional production facilities. As customer inquiries for the 1.4-nanometer process increase, Samsung is considering adding more fabs. It said detailed plans will be fleshed out in stages based on customer orders and discussions.
For mature nodes, Samsung plans to shift to the more profitable three-stack process and focus its resources on demand for high-value specialty products with high technological barriers.
