Altcoin Divide Widens as Rotation Stalls, Leaving Only Catalyst-Driven Tokens Afloat

Minseung Kang

Summary

  • Buying in the altcoin market has concentrated in Ethereum (ETH) and a handful of catalyst-driven tokens, while broader rotation across altcoins has failed to take hold.
  • Tokens facing coin-specific negatives, including EigenLayer (EIGEN) on a token unlock, DEXE on selling by large wallets, and RIF on profit-taking, showed clear weakness.
  • Analysts say a selective market centered on Ethereum and tokens with individual catalysts is likely to persist until on-chain activity and market liquidity recover.

Performance gaps across the altcoin market are widening. Ethereum has stayed relatively resilient, while buying has concentrated in a handful of tokens with asset-specific catalysts. Broader rotation across altcoins has yet to emerge. Until on-chain activity and market liquidity recover, the market is likely to remain highly selective.

Only 20% of Tokens Rise as Buying Narrows to Catalyst-Driven Names

Among the top 300 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, only about 60 posted gains over the past week, or roughly 20% of the total. About 240 declined, showing that buying failed to spread across the broader market.

Data from CoinMarketCap on July 31 showed HEX soaring 103% over the past week, the biggest gain among the top 300 tokens by market capitalization. Momentum rose 67.2%, AKE climbed 60.1%, PulseX gained 43.5% and PulseChain advanced 37.2%. Still, the biggest gainers were concentrated in PulseChain-related assets and smaller-cap tokens, making it hard to describe the move as a broad altcoin rotation.

Among the gainers, tokens with clear individual catalysts stood out. Ubi jumped 41.3% after announcing a partnership with RoboPay. Uniswap rose 13.9% as expectations for v4 fee activation and UNI buybacks and burns coincided with the beta launch of a new token issuance platform, Launches. Bitway gained 17.6%, with liquidations of high-leverage short positions seen amplifying the move. SOON climbed 22.4%, PROS added 20.6%, SoSoValue rose 19.7% and Trust Wallet Token gained 16.1%.

By contrast, ALLO posted the steepest weekly decline, dropping 46%. BILL fell 25.6%, while Worldcoin lost 19.5%, Jito dropped 17.5%, GMX slid 16.8% and Backpack fell 16.5%.

Tokens facing coin-specific setbacks also weakened. EigenLayer fell 16.9% ahead of a 36.82 million-token unlock scheduled for Aug. 1, while a decline in total value locked added pressure. DEXE dropped 16.2% amid selling by large wallets and liquidations of leveraged positions. RIF lost 19% as traders took profits following its previous sharp rally.

Ethereum Strength Has Yet to Spark Broad Altcoin Rotation

Despite Ethereum's relative strength, capital rotation across the broader altcoin market remains limited. The medium-term trend and on-chain activity have yet to show a clear recovery. External uncertainties, including U.S. monetary policy, tensions in the Middle East and negotiations over the CLARITY Act, are also weighing on sentiment.

Only 29 of the top 100 cryptocurrencies were trading above their 50-day moving averages. Alex Kuptsikevich, an analyst at FxPro, said the total crypto market capitalization was holding near $2.19 trillion and remained above its 50-day moving average. He added that the crypto market had shown relative resilience even as Nasdaq technology stocks weakened recently. Even so, the advance remains too narrow to signal a broader recovery in market direction.

Ethereum has continued to outperform Bitcoin and major altcoins on a relative basis. Bitfinex said Ethereum fell less than Bitcoin during the recent correction, while the ETH/BTC ratio has risen about 20% from last month's low to its highest level in six weeks. By contrast, the SOL/ETH ratio has dropped 23.2% this month, nearing its lowest level in about 900 days. That suggests capital is concentrating in Ethereum rather than rotating across the altcoin market as a whole.

On-chain indicators also do not yet support a broader altcoin recovery. Jamie Coutts, chief crypto analyst at Real Vision, said the current move looks more like a short-term rally in select tokens during a bear market. He said Bitcoin's advance needs to continue for altcoin strength to be sustained. Key on-chain indicators, including fees, active users and application activity, have yet to show a meaningful rebound.

Some analysts are also cautious about the durability of the short-term rebound. Benjamin Cowen, founder of Into The Cryptoverse, said Bitcoin has risen about 10.5% this month, but the move resembles rebounds that followed June lows in 2018 and 2022, both U.S. midterm election years. He added that past cycles often saw weakness return in August and September after a July rebound. Rising yields on U.S. 10-year Treasuries could also weigh on the crypto market. If Bitcoin's rebound loses momentum, rotation into altcoins may remain limited.

Macro and policy uncertainty are also restraining altcoin rotation. Concerns over U.S. monetary policy and the Middle East remain in place, and any shift toward risk aversion could hit smaller, more volatile altcoins first. Negotiations over the CLARITY Act have also stalled over ethics provisions and the issue of stablecoin yields. On Polymarket, the probability of the bill becoming law this year fell to 26% on July 31 from 62% in early June. Until on-chain activity and liquidity recover, the market is likely to favor Ethereum and tokens with individual catalysts.
