Iran Proposes Temporary Strait of Hormuz Shipping Plan, Seeking Control of Incoming Vessels

Iran and Oman are discussing a temporary operating plan for the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported.

Walter Bloomberg, citing Reuters, reported on Aug. 4 that the two countries are in talks over an interim arrangement to reopen the strait.

Under the proposal, Iran would take full control of vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz. Oman would coordinate outbound traffic after giving Iran prior notice, according to the report.

A senior Iranian source said the framework would allow Iran to monitor the movement of all ships and intervene if necessary. The source added that Tehran is unlikely to accept any alternative to the plan.

Separately, Iraq's Oil Ministry said through state media on Aug. 4 that tankers carrying Iraqi crude passed through the Strait of Hormuz normally.
