The share of Seoul homebuyers funding property purchases by selling stocks, bonds and cryptocurrencies has more than doubled over the past four years.

Maeil Business Newspaper reported on Aug. 4 that an analysis of housing purchase financing plans submitted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to the office of People Power Party lawmaker Kim Jong-yang showed proceeds from stock, bond and crypto sales accounted for 7.6% of home purchase funds among individual buyers in Seoul from January through May.

That was up 4.7 percentage points from 2.9% in 2021, marking a more than twofold increase in about four years.

Seoul recorded the highest share among South Korea’s 17 cities and provinces for the use of proceeds from stock, bond and crypto sales to fund home purchases.
