Iran Says Oman Talks Near Final Agreement, Not a Guarantee of Hormuz Safety

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said talks with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz are in their final stage, Walter Bloomberg reported on August 5.

The two sides are close to issuing a joint statement, provided there is no intervention by a specific third country, the spokesman said. He added that Iran and Oman had also agreed on the geographic characteristics of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz.

He stressed, however, that any agreement between Iran and Oman would not in itself guarantee safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
