Sumi Jo Marks 40th Stage Debut Anniversary With Special Exhibition After Maria Callas Prize

ArtCube 2R2 said Aug. 6 that it will stage a special exhibition, "CONTINUUM: Songs of the Four Seasons," at its gallery in Seoul's Gangnam district to mark the 40th anniversary of soprano Sumi Jo's world stage debut.

The exhibition reinterprets Jo's 40-year musical journey through the progression of spring, summer, autumn and winter. Seventeen leading South Korean artists will present paintings and sculptural works. ArtCube 2R2 said the show will offer a new artistic experience through an exchange between Jo's music and contemporary art.

The exhibition spans three floors, with each space designed to embody the emotions and imagery of the four seasons. Visitors are meant to experience Jo's musical world and the seasonal cycle in an immersive way as they move through the gallery. An ArtCube 2R2 official described it as an effort to expand music, an art of time, into physical space.

Jo recently received the 12th Maria Callas Special Prize, reaffirming her global stature. She is the first Asian musician to win the award.

The Maria Callas Special Prize is an achievement award established in honor of Maria Callas, one of the defining sopranos of the 20th century. It is presented to artists with distinguished contributions to the development of opera and classical music worldwide. Past recipients include director Franco Zeffirelli and baritone Leo Nucci.

The 12th ceremony was held in Verona on Aug. 2, the date of Callas's debut in Mudè, Italy. Jo said she was honored to receive the Maria Callas Special Prize in the same city and on the same date, 79 years after the legendary diva's historic debut. She added that the honor would remain one of the most unforgettable moments of her life because it bears the name of a great artist who illuminated an era.

Jo is also marking her 40th debut anniversary with a series of projects, including the release of her new album "Continuum," the second Sumi Jo International Singing Competition and an overseas tour. She is set to perform for domestic audiences at a 40th-anniversary concert at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on Sept. 4.
