A day earlier, Trump said the US was having "very good discussions" with Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen soon. Iran has denied Trump's claim that it is engaged in direct talks with Washington, saying instead that it is discussing passage for commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz with mediator Oman.
Trump also pushed back on media reports that key US military weapons stockpiles are being depleted rapidly. "We have very powerful ammunition, and we can supply it essentially without limit," he said.
