Ido Ben-Natan, chief executive officer of on-chain security firm Blockaid, said the Coldcard vulnerability exposed structural weaknesses in crypto systems that rely on private keys.
Ben-Natan told The Block on August 7 that private key-based systems can ultimately create a single point of failure.
Coldcard was designed to keep private keys offline and separated from the internet. Hackers, however, exploited a vulnerability in the device's wallet-seed generation process, where insufficient randomness was secured.
"Storing assets somewhere and forgetting about them is not the real solution," he said. "The security environment changes very quickly, so users must remain constantly vigilant or entrust those security decisions to specialist institutions with the capability to make them properly."
