Artoken Stages Sumi Jo 40th-Anniversary Exhibition at ArtCube 2R2

A special exhibition marking soprano Sumi Jo’s 40th anniversary since her world-stage debut is being held at ArtCube 2R2, a multiuse cultural venue operated by blockchain-based art platform Artoken.
Artoken said Aug. 14 that Jo visited the special exhibition, “CONTINUUM: Song of the Four Seasons,” at the Gangnam district venue in Seoul the previous day. ArtCube 2R2 is a cultural complex the company runs to connect exhibitions with the intellectual property of performance artists.
The exhibition reinterprets Jo’s 40-year musical journey through the flow of spring, summer, autumn and winter. Seventeen South Korean artists are taking part with paintings and sculptural works, and archival materials including Jo’s performance dresses, medals, concert posters and photographs are also on display.
Jo toured the three-floor exhibition space during her visit. A celebratory performance by conductor Han Sang-hoon and the Gyeonggi Nuri Youth Orchestra was also held on site.
“It feels deeply moving and new to see the 40 years I’ve lived through reborn in a single space through the eyes of different artists,” Jo said. “As I walked through the exhibition, the moments I felt on stage came back to me one by one.”
Artoken is using ArtCube 2R2 to broaden the connection between its blockchain-based art platform business and offline exhibition content. The Sumi Jo exhibition is also focused on presenting a new form of artistic content by combining a musician’s intellectual property with contemporary art.
Hong Ji-sook, chief executive of Artoken and ArtCube 2R2, said Jo’s visit and her review of the stories embedded in each space gave the exhibition added meaning. The venue will continue to offer new artistic experiences as a cultural platform linking exhibitions and performance artists, Hong added.
“CONTINUUM: Song of the Four Seasons” runs through Aug. 22. Jo is set to hold a concert marking the 40th anniversary of her world-stage debut at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on Sept. 4.
