Forecast Trend Report by Period

The number of retail shareholders in South Korea’s two biggest chipmakers, Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., has surpassed 11 million.
Samsung Electronics’ half-year report filed on August 15 with the Financial Supervisory Service’s electronic disclosure system showed it had 7,971,242 minority shareholders as of the end of June, the highest level on record.
That was an increase of about 2.92 million from 5,049,085 a year earlier and about 3.77 million from 4,195,927 at the end of last year. Minority shareholders owned 66.24% of Samsung Electronics’ outstanding shares.
SK Hynix had 3,461,526 minority shareholders as of the end of June.
That was up by 2,779,855 from 681,671 a year earlier and by 2,275,198 from 1,186,328 at the end of last year. Minority shareholders held 484,497,952 shares, or 67.98% of the company’s 712,702,365 outstanding shares.
SK Hynix classifies shareholders holding less than 1% of total issued shares as minority shareholders.
Combined, the two companies had 11,432,768 minority shareholders. Given South Korea’s adult population, the figures point to a sharp increase in retail interest in the country’s leading chip stocks.
