Bitcoin Futures Open Interest Nears $48 Billion, Heightening Risk of Liquidation-Driven Selloff

Summary

  • Bitcoin futures open interest (OI) has climbed to $48 billion, while trading volume is just $25 billion, increasing the risk of sharp price swings as liquidity thins.
  • Glassnode said traders have built up substantial exposure on the long side, and a forced liquidation event could deepen the price decline because there may be too few buy orders to absorb the selling.
  • Glassnode said buy orders below the market have fallen by about one-third, and if the Bitcoin price retests its June low of $58,000, the move could trigger a steeper decline.

Open interest in the Bitcoin futures market has grown far larger than daily trading volume, increasing the risk of sharp price swings if liquidity proves too thin.

CoinDesk reported on Aug. 17, citing CoinGlass data, that Bitcoin futures open interest now stands at $48 billion, while 24-hour trading volume is $25 billion. That has brought the gap between the two metrics to its narrowest since September 2025. The market structure contrasts with 2019 and 2020, when trading volume was two to three times open interest.

Glassnode wrote in a report that if forced liquidations hit while open interest remains well above daily volume, there may be few buy orders available to absorb the selling. That could amplify any decline. Traders have also accumulated substantial long exposure even without stronger demand to support the market.

Downside pressure is a particular concern because buy orders have been shrinking. Glassnode said bids below the market have fallen by about one-third since peaking in early July. If Bitcoin retests its June low of $58,000, the thinner pool of resting demand could lead to a steeper drop.

An imbalance between spot and futures trading is adding to the risk. Bitcoin spot trading volume over the past 24 hours stands at $12.55 billion, roughly half the futures level. That leaves the spot market less able to absorb a wave of large liquidations in derivatives. Bitcoin was trading near $63,500.
