Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the network’s current scaling strategy is focused on sharply increasing throughput while preserving decentralization and censorship resistance.

Writing on X on Aug. 17, Buterin said, “this is what the currently proposed Ethereum scaling strategy actually looks like.” He added that the Bitcoin community deserves substantial credit for pioneering many of these ideas through efforts such as Utreexo.

Buterin said Ethereum is seeking to combine the strengths of Bitcoin’s UTXO model, which simplifies state management, with the dynamic state management required for smart contracts.

In this context, “state” refers to the blockchain’s current record of network information at a given point in time, including account balances and smart-contract data.

“The goal is to enable most Ethereum activity to scale massively without sacrificing decentralization, ease of running a node, or censorship resistance,” Buterin wrote.

In other words, the plan is to build a scaling architecture that can absorb a sharp increase in network usage while still allowing ordinary users to run their own nodes and preserving Ethereum’s decentralized nature.
