On Aug. 18, Armstrong wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that “x402 will eventually become the norm.” Every AI agent will need to make payments to buy or use something, he wrote, adding that AI agents will eventually far outnumber humans.
x402 is an open payment protocol built on HTTP 402, or Payment Required, allowing AI agents to automatically pay for APIs and digital services. It primarily supports stablecoin-based on-chain payments and is designed to let users pay instantly for needed services without separate accounts or subscriptions.
