US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington will strongly press allies to join its economic pressure campaign against Iran.
In an interview with CNBC on Aug. 20, Bessent said the effort would be "the most coordinated economic isolation" campaign in world history. He added that the US would tell allies they must choose whether they are with Washington or against it.
Bessent said he would hold a press conference on Aug. 24 to unveil details of the plan to increase economic pressure on Iran. He said the campaign would bring down the Iranian regime.
He also said the maximum-pressure economic campaign reduces the likelihood of large-scale military action. "I would emphasize that, for now, that is the case," Bessent said.
President Donald Trump said on Aug. 19 that the US would launch an unprecedented economic isolation campaign against Iran and called on third countries to cooperate.
