Summary

  • BNB Smart Chain said it will carry out the Pasteur hard fork to strengthen validator and cross-chain security and improve network throughput.
  • The upgrade will block duplicate validators and strengthen the validator management system to improve security in the cross-chain transaction validation process.
  • In the test environment, validator processing time fell while TPS and average block gas usage increased, though the results do not guarantee actual mainnet performance.

BNB Smart Chain will deploy its Pasteur hard fork to strengthen validator and cross-chain security and improve network throughput.

Crypto media outlet U.Today reported on Aug. 24 that the Pasteur hard fork is scheduled to go live on the BSC mainnet at 11:30 a.m. Korea Standard Time on Aug. 25. Regular users and most developers do not need to take any action, but node operators must update their clients to v1.7 in advance.

The upgrade includes measures to tighten security in the cross-chain transaction validation process. Under the previous system, voting power could be counted more than once if the same validator appeared multiple times on the validator list. The update blocks duplicate validators and checks whether a true majority of validators participated.

The validator management system will also be strengthened. Existing penalties will remain in place even if a validator changes its key, and control over replaced old keys will be blocked.

The hard fork also introduces a feature designed to improve transaction-processing efficiency. Previously, validators re-executed transactions after a block producer had already processed them. The change reduces that step and shortens the time needed for validation.

In BSC's test environment, validator processing time fell to 15 milliseconds from 125 milliseconds, while transactions per second, or TPS, rose to 2,324 from 1,237. Average block gas usage increased to 84.15 million from 46.35 million. BSC said the figures were measured in a test environment and do not guarantee mainnet performance.
