Monad, an Ethereum-compatible blockchain, has proposed an upgrade that would separate wallet addresses from the security keys that control them, allowing users to keep the same address and assets even if a key is lost or replaced.

CoinDesk reported on August 25 that Monad is proposing a new account structure that would let users add or replace the security method used to approve transactions without changing the wallet address.

With most crypto wallets today, losing a private key can mean permanent loss of access to assets. Changing security methods also often requires users to create a new wallet and transfer their holdings.

If adopted, Monad's proposal would let users switch wallet authentication methods among options including private keys, passkeys stored on smartphones or laptops, multisignature systems that require multiple parties to approve a transaction, and encryption methods designed to resist future attacks from quantum computers. The wallet address and assets would remain unchanged throughout the process.

The proposal could also enable account recovery if a private key is lost. For example, users could set up a system in advance requiring two trusted people to jointly register a new authentication method if the original key disappears.

Monad says the approach could help users prepare for the possibility that powerful quantum computers may one day render current digital signature systems ineffective. Users could then shift to quantum-resistant security methods without creating a new wallet.

The proposal is still in the early draft stage. Monad has yet to determine the specific implementation, and existing accounts could continue to use the current model even if the proposal is ultimately adopted.
