Ethereum developers have drafted an Ethereum Improvement Proposal, or EIP, to revamp the deposit contract used for validator staking against the threat of quantum computing. The proposal is aimed at laying the groundwork for Ethereum to eventually adopt quantum-resistant cryptography.
Decrypt reported on August 26 that the proposal would expand the maximum size of validator public keys to 8,192 bytes from the current 48-byte limit.
The larger key size would allow the staking system to support quantum-resistant cryptographic technologies in the future, since those methods require bigger keys than the current setup. The draft also includes a feature that would permanently stop new deposits using the BLS signature scheme now used by Ethereum validators.
The proposal does not specify which quantum-resistant signature scheme Ethereum would adopt. That would be addressed in a separate EIP later, and the current proposal remains under review as a draft.
