Justin Sun Says Bitcoin’s Shift to Quantum Resistance Will Take Significant Time; Tron Targets Upgrade This Year

Building consensus across the Bitcoin ecosystem on how to respond to quantum-computing risks will take significant time, according to Justin Sun.

BlockBeats and other outlets reported on Aug. 27 that the Tron founder made the remarks at the Bitcoin Asia 2026 conference in Hong Kong. He said quantum computing is a shared threat facing not only blockchain networks but the broader financial system.

Bitcoin’s high degree of decentralization means adopting quantum-resistant technology could be a lengthy process, Sun said. Changes to the Bitcoin network would require support from a broad range of stakeholders, including miners, exchanges, wallet providers and companies linked to Wrapped Bitcoin, or WBTC.

Sun also said traditional financial firms such as JPMorgan are not insulated from the security risks posed by advances in quantum computing. If sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge, some of the cryptographic technology used in today’s traditional finance, or TradFi, systems could be rendered ineffective.

Tron is already developing technology to address the threat, he added. The network has spent the past year researching a quantum-resistant system and plans to upgrade to a quantum-resistant network by the end of this year.
