Virtu Financial and Tradeweb have completed an on-chain repurchase agreement, or repo, transaction backed by a digital sovereign bond issued by the Marshall Islands. The firms said it was the first transaction to be executed and settled entirely on-chain using a sovereign digital bond as collateral.

Cointelegraph reported on Aug. 27 that Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb completed the full repo transaction workflow on the Canton Network.

The collateral was USDM1, a dollar-denominated sovereign bond issued on-chain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands. USDM1 is linked one-to-one to short-term US Treasuries and is structured as fully collateralized sovereign debt under New York law.

The three companies described the deal as the first repo transaction to combine domestically issued sovereign collateral with fully on-chain atomic settlement. Regulated institutions executed the trade on Tradeweb's platform, and the entire process, from the initial repo sale to repurchase, was completed in less than 10 minutes.

The transaction is notable because it used tokenized sovereign debt not only for issuance and distribution, but also as collateral in institutional finance markets. Still, it was a single trade, so it remains unclear whether the model will spread across the broader institutional repo market. Institutional custody for USDM1 is provided by Anchorage Digital, BitGo and tZERO.

The Canton Network is an institutional blockchain network designed for regulated financial transactions and tokenized assets. In July, Tradeweb brokered a transaction on the Canton Network that transferred Franklin Templeton's tokenized US Treasuries to Virtu Financial in real time.

Institutional finance experiments on the Canton Network have also been increasing. FalconX and InterStiS launched a cross-chain swap engine linking Canton with Ethereum, Solana and Robinhood Chain. World Liberty Financial issued its stablecoin USD1 on the Canton Network. The American Idea Foundation, established by Digital Asset and former US House Speaker Paul Ryan, also plans a 2027 pilot program to distribute government benefits using the Canton Network in three US states.
