US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled additional sanctions on Iran and said Washington would step up economic pressure on the country.

Bessent said on September 1 that the US would apply a policy of “no tolerance” toward Iran and “tighten the screws economically,” according to Walter Bloomberg, a social media account that posts breaking economic news.

Sanctions related to Iran, including measures targeting banks, could be announced this week and next week, he said. He added that the US had also held private discussions with China on Iran.

Bessent said Iran holds the world’s third-largest energy resources. He also said about 85% to 90% of Iranian factories have the capacity to be rebuilt.

On trade ties with China, Bessent said the US does not want a full decoupling from China. De-risking, however, is necessary.
