Crypto projects are increasingly launching token buybacks worth hundreds of millions of dollars in a bid to lift token prices and increase value for holders, but debate continues over whether the strategy delivers lasting benefits.

Cointelegraph reported on September 4 that some projects are expanding buyback programs that use protocol-generated revenue to repurchase their own tokens on the market.

Token buybacks are touted as a way to reduce circulating supply and indirectly return project revenue to token holders.

Critics, however, argue that committing large sums to buybacks can reduce funds available for product development and ecosystem expansion. That has emerged as a key point of debate, with questions over whether buybacks can support sustained token value gains or simply provide a short-term boost to prices.
