Kakao Pay Completes Agentic Payment PoC for AI Agent Buying and Selling, Linked to Stablecoins

Kakao Pay said on Sept. 15 that it has completed a proof of concept for "agentic payment," a technology that enables artificial intelligence agents to carry out payments in both purchasing and selling processes.

The proof of concept covered not only purchase payments by AI agents, but also functions that allow sellers to sell data and other web resources to AI agents and settle the resulting revenue.

In agentic payment, a user gives an AI agent a wallet with policies such as purchasing authority and payment limits. The AI agent then determines, within those limits, what goods, services or data are needed and executes the payment. The system is based on web payment protocols such as x402. In April, Kakao Pay joined the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation as the first Korean payment company to participate as a founding member.

In the latest test, Kakao Pay linked its digital-asset wallet and payment infrastructure so AI agents could make payments in stablecoins. It said it built the processes required for agentic payments, including wallet integration, payment and settlement, management of balances, limits and policies, and communication between agents.

Users can review an AI agent's payment history, limits and merchants through the existing Kakao Pay app.

Kakao Pay also verified monetization functions for sellers. When a seller that holds web resources such as APIs receives a request for data from an external AI agent, the seller can provide and sell that resource through stablecoin payment and settlement. For example, a company holding map ratings data or weather information could sell that data to an AI agent that needs it.

The company also linked merchant wallets with business accounts so sellers can check sales and settlement details through a dedicated dashboard. Kakao Pay said it provides wallets, payment processing, blockchain-based settlement and dashboards as a single infrastructure.

Kakao Pay said the proof of concept laid the technical foundation for two-way agentic commerce, in which agents transact with one another without human intervention and increase benefits for both buyers and sellers. It added that it will continue building infrastructure that can support digital assets such as stablecoins.

Based on the technology test, Kakao Pay plans to strengthen user protection measures in line with South Korea's digital-asset regulatory policies and pursue commercialization and broader adoption of agentic payment technology.
