OpenAI is seeking private funding at a $1.2 trillion valuation ahead of a planned initial public offering, the Financial Times reported on September 15.

OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation. Investors initiated the latest round, prompting the company to return to the market just six months later, the FT said. Rival Anthropic, which is also preparing for an IPO later this year, was valued at $965 billion in May. If OpenAI completes the new financing, its valuation would surpass Anthropic's.

OpenAI plans to use the funds to secure cash for training high-performance artificial intelligence models and operating its services. Sarah Friar, OpenAI's chief financial officer, told CNBC on September 15 that she is not worried about slowing development in the name of safety. She added that the company will make investment decisions based on high return on investment.

Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said on September 12 that it is not the right time to go public, given developments related to safety.
