Ripple, the issuer of XRP, has expanded XRP Ledger developer tools to support cryptocurrency payments for artificial intelligence agents.

CoinDesk reported on Sept. 17 that Ripple added support for the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, and the Open Wallet Standard in version 1.1 of its XRPL AI Starter Kit.

MPP is an open payment standard developed jointly by global payments company Stripe and Layer 1 blockchain Tempo. The Open Wallet Standard enables software to manage wallets across multiple blockchains through a single common interface.

The integration allows developers to use XRP and Ripple's dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD as payment methods in applications built on MPP. "Our role is to help ensure XRP and RLUSD are the first choice wherever developers are building," Jazzi Cooper, head of product at RippleX, said.

Ripple previously introduced x402, a web-based payment standard, to XRP Ledger in June. Supporting both x402 and MPP appears to be part of a strategy to broaden its reach in the AI agent payments market.
