The Federal Bureau of Investigation has held a symposium focused on combating virtual-asset, or cryptocurrency, crime for the past nine years.
CoinDesk reported on September 23 that the FBI’s virtual-asset symposium brings together law enforcement officials, overseas investigators and crypto security specialists to share information on related crimes. This year’s event was held in Texas this month.
Attendees included blockchain forensics firms Chainalysis and TRM Labs, as well as officials from the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN. Discussions covered cases involving the illicit use of crypto linked to cartels and terrorism financing, cyber fraud, child sexual abuse material, human trafficking and wrench attacks.
Participants also reviewed new hacking methods and North Korea’s crypto-related activities, along with ways for the industry and law enforcement agencies to share crime-related information.
