Trump Says He and Xi Made ‘Tremendous Progress’ on Issues Facing Both Countries

President Donald Trump said on September 24 that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had made "tremendous progress" by working together on issues facing both countries.

Trump made the remarks during a state welcome ceremony for Xi at the White House. He cited trade as a key achievement of U.S.-China cooperation, in comments that appeared to refer to the U.S.-China trade committee the two sides agreed to establish during his trip to China in May.

Trump said the summit would address urgent issues related to security, technology and "super intelligence," or SI. "The decisions we make today in these areas can advance peace and prosperity for decades," he said. Trump uses "super intelligence" as his own term for artificial intelligence.

He added that he was confident the two countries could accomplish much if they focused on shared interests. The two sides have been working to build a balanced trade relationship, including new market access for U.S. farmers and ranchers.

Trump also emphasized his personal relationship with Xi, saying he had built a strong friendship with the Chinese leader since he was first elected president in 2016.
