U.S. job openings fell short of market expectations in August.
The Labor Department said on September 29 in its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, that job openings totaled 7.079 million in August. That was below the market forecast of 7.23 million and down from 7.335 million in the previous month.
The decline in job openings may be interpreted as a sign that companies' demand for labor is slowing.
The Conference Board's U.S. consumer confidence index for September, released at the same time, came in at 81.9. That was below both the market forecast of 89.2 and the previous month's 88.6.
