"Tracking Harder": Bitget Hacker Moves $4 Million in Zcash to Privacy Pool

A wallet linked to the hack of global cryptocurrency exchange Bitget moved about $4 million worth of Zcash into a privacy pool, making the stolen assets even harder to trace.

CoinDesk reported on September 30 that a wallet believed to be tied to the Bitget hacker deposited 2,746 Zcash into Ironwood, Zcash's latest shielded pool. The funds were transferred in three transactions and were worth $3.9 million at the time.

The hacker is known to have obtained about 18,917 Zcash through the recent Bitget hack. The amount moved into the privacy pool this time accounted for roughly 15% of the total stolen Zcash.

Zcash supports both transparent and private transactions. Transactions conducted through a privacy pool do not disclose the sender, recipient or transfer amount. That means even if the funds are later withdrawn to a transparent address, it is difficult to determine whether they are the same Zcash stolen in the hack.

CoinDesk also recently reported that a wallet linked to the hacker swapped $6.3 million worth of Ether for Bitcoin through THORChain. It added that tracking the funds is becoming increasingly difficult as Bitget seeks to recover the stolen assets.
